Starting Potential of the Geiger-Mueller Counter Discharge

Abstract

The starting voltage for the pulse-equalizing Geiger-Mueller tube discharge has been measured for mixtures of argon and hydrocarbons and helium and hydrocarbons. The results are discussed in the light of the known ionization potentials of the homologous series of normal hydrocarbons and the energy levels of the phenomena which contribute directly---by ionization---or indirectly---by metastable intermediates---to the production of the ions in the initial process.
