Role of IJVs in Transferring Technology to China

This paper assesses the technology transferability of international joint ventures (IJVs) in current China through a case study. Based on the data gathered through a postal questionnaire survey and interviews in an open coastal city of China, it demonstrates that IJVs have become a main channel to transfer technology to China. However, the technology value in IJVs is still low. The technological packages in most joint ventures are uncompleted. The uneven flow of technology components does not show much help for increasing domestic innovation capability. In order to increase the transferability of IJVs, current export-oriented strategy employed by the host region should be adjusted.
