麻酔科医にとり挿管困難症例は避けては通れない重大な問題である. 挿管困難症に対しては種々の方法が考案されているが, このなかで気管支ファイバースコープ (BF) をガイドにして気管挿管を行う方法は, 使用法に慣れれば合併症が少なく, 短時間ででき, 最も成功率が高い. 経口あるいは経鼻挿管が可能なすべての挿管困難症例に適応があると思われる. BFによる気管挿管は安全かつ確実な方法であるため, 麻酔を専門とするすべての医師にとり必須の技術であり, 熟練していなければならない.
