Abstract

Szklarski, A. (2004): Empirical phenomenology. A presentation of the research approach and experiences of one phenomenological study. Nordisk Psykologi, 56, 4, 274–288. Empirical phenomenology is a qualitative research approach within social science. This approach has been developed within psychology, but is built on the theory of philosophical phenomenology and its methodological assumptions. Different aspects of empirical phenomenology are presented, commented and discussed in this article. The development of the empirical phenomenological approach has resulted in a number of branches and methodological alternatives. A discussion about the relation between classical and hermeneutical oriented empirical phenomenology is one of the topics in this article. Furthermore the procedure of phenomenological research is illustrated with the concentration on analyses of empirical material. A method of analysis developed by Adrian Vam Kaam is presented and examined with the base on experiences of my own empirical study.
