Abstract
This article gives the general picture of the present situation and development of water transport in China. It outlines the size of the problems, the organizations concerned and achievements since 1949. It contains, on the one hand, the description of the whole development of transport by this mode from the founding of People's China to the present, and, on the other hand, the introduction of ocean‐going and coastal shipping, ports, inland water transport and other equipment. The paper describes the economic reformation of water transport now being undertaken, the shortcomings at the present time and our vision of the future.
