Abstract
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has begun to develop an automated highway system (AHS). The AHS program plan is briefly described. A set of precursor systems analyses that have been outlined to guide the initial phase of AHS development is described. These analyses examine AHS requirements, issues, and risks in the areas of AHS applications, technology, design, deployment, operation, and practicality.
