Abstract
Benzoic acid occurs, if at all, only in trace amounts (<1 mg/kg). Red whortleberries and cranberries as exceptions contain considerable contents of 1-O-benzoyl-β-D-glucose (ca. 150 bis 340 and 90 bis 160 mg/kg respectively) and lower contents of 6-O-benzoyl-α- und β-D-glucose and 2-O-benzoyl-β-D-glucose besides 73 bis 124 mg/kg of benzoic acid. In fruits of mountain-ash 40 mg/kg of benzoic acid, 12 mg/kg of cinnamic acid and 5 mg/kg of 1-O-benzoyl-β-D-glucose were present. In some species of fruit and vegetables we have found cinnamic acid, e.g. 66 mg/kg in strawberries and 7 to 40 mg/kg in red whortleberries, phenylacetic acid (to 16 mg/kg) and 3-phenylpropionic acid (to 5 mg/kg)
