Abstract

Abstract In this article we describe the causes of signal fluctuation in wireless systems and describe the phenomena of short‐term and long‐term fading. Some of the topics included are narrowband and wideband fading, Rayleigh fading, Ricean fading, lognormal fading, level crossing rates, average fade duration, channel coherence time, Doppler spread, delay spread, and coherence bandwidth. The impact of fading on the performance of systems and in the design of cell size is discussed.
