Abstract
Infection of dogs with Echinococcus granulosus is recorded for the first time in Kano State, Nigeria. Out of 145 stray dogs examined, nine (6·21%) harboured E. granulosus. Other parasites found in these dogs included Ancylostoma caninum (42·1%), Toxocara canis (55·2%), Taenia hydatigena (77·9%) and Dipylidium caninum (90·3%). Hydatid cysts were detected in various species during meat inspection at the Kano abattoir. The prevalence of hydatidosis in slaughtered food animals was: cattle 14·7%, sheep 11·4%, goats 26·5% and camels 55·5%.Possible mechanisms for the maintenance of echinococcosis in Kano State are discussed.
