A SF Myth and Storytelling in ‘Star Wars’

George Lucas made an epic space opera which based on the script written by himself when he was young from 1977 to 2005. These film series consist of 6 stories follow Joseph Campbell’s ‘myth structure’ developed from stories and legends from around the world. However, what I focused in this paper is that George Lucas himself is a American Hero who proved American Modern Myth, by following the heroic mono-myth and myth structure. He laid the foundation stone for the movie makers to be independent from the dominant big movie productions. And he contributed to the development of special effect by wa of establishing the company ILM which mainly deal with special effect and CG. In addition, he proved that the movie could produce the derivative products such as games, books and TV series. Not only making the universal hero on the screen but also he in the real world never stopped the trials confronting the hardships and restrictions. Hereby I could call him a real hero in the mass culture society. Like the protagonist Luke Skywalker in the movie, he himself found his own summon and followed the path of his own to find the bliss which could be shared by the world citizens. To him, the mythology is a key to open one’s inner deep spritual ability and the gift to ge to the joy, fantasy, and even the pleasure. This paper analyzes the life of George Lucas as a movie maker as well as dream maker putting him into the route of hero’s journey.
