Abstract
The USA have entered a phase of steady decline in serviceability of its rigid pavement interstate road network. The causes for the decline are related to materials, environmental conditions, design, construction, and the inadequacy of a pavement management system to properly suggest rehabilitative measures. One frequent cause is the ingress of water into the pavement system resulting in pumping and loss of pavement support. A scheme is proposed for road network evaluation, maintenance, and rehabilitation. The scheme has three succinct stages for rating and classification of the system in three categories of good, fair, and bad. For the segments of the network rated as bad, a structural evaluation is made incorporating specific pavement features. Based on the combined information on ratings and structural evaluation, appropriate rehabilitation techniques are developed for maintenance, repairs, and reconstruction. The paper outlines available procedures and concepts for each stage of the rehabilitation scheme. (Author/TRRL)
