Abstract

Summary In spite of the fact, that 25% of the earth land area is permanent grassland, and about 60% of the pasture land located in developing countries, fodder production should become more important in the Tropics. Overgrazed pastures contribute to soil erosion and possibly accelerate desertification in the semi-arid tropics, therefore increased fodder production allows not only increased animal production but also increased soil productivity. The population will be better supplied with protein by increasing animal production.
