Abstract

Intended as a text for advanced courses in highway and transportation engineering, the book also summarises the state-of-the-art and developments in transport planning and highway technology. This edition of the book takes into account changes in emphasis likely in this field and includes references to the rehabilitation of existing pavements, making better use of existing facilities, different forms of public transportation, problems of energy shortage, greater highway safety, new materials, and highway problems of developing countries. The following chapters are included: highway and urban transportation systems, organizations and associations; highway and urban transportation planning; economy and resource use; financing highways and public transportation; computers, surveys and plans; legal problems in transportation; driver, vehicle, traffic and road characteristics; highway design; highway operations - traffic engineering; drainage; highway accident prevention; transportation and the environment; soils and materials; constructing the roadbed; gravel and crushed rock roads - stabilized roads; base courses; macadam surfaces - macadam bases; bituminous pavements; portland-cement-concrete pavements; and, highway maintenance and rehabilitation.
