Abstract
The cone penetration and flat dilatometer tests continue to enjoy widespread use as reliable in situ test methods. When used together, enough data are obtained for the design of footings in most soil conditions. While the cone penetrometer has undergone extensive development, aimed at increasing the speed of testing, analysis and interpretation of the results, the flat dilatometer test continues to require manual operation and recording of data. This paper describes the developments in automated data recording and processing of the cone penetration and flat dilatometer tests at the University of Adelaide over the past decade or so.
