Abstract
Summary The results of an agronomic survey carried out on bean fields ( Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in the Basse Plaine des Gonaives, Haiti, can be summarized as follows: The varieties Descayette and Blanc can still be recommended for cultivation by their adaptation to local conditions, productivity and acceptance by the population. The greatest influence on the yield was exerted by the yield components weight of thousand seeds and to some extent by the number of seeds/pod. The seed quantity for both varieties should be examined with respect to variety characteristics, the plasticity of yield components, and the preparation of the soil for sowing. Sowing on ridges failed to produce higher yields as compared with sowing on plain surface. Under the given cultivation conditions the weed population had no influence on the yield. All soils are well to very well provided with phosphorus and potassium which should give cause for a review of the large fertilizer quantities recommend to date. A limited potential for increasing the productivity and profitability of bean cultivation under subsistence farming conditions was found.
