Abstract
The papers in this book provide technical guidance to engineers regarding the problems, solutions, and uncertainties associated with groundwater contamination in the United States. The papers are divided into the following areas: groundwater contamination, monitoring and detection, control of contamination, and renovating contaminated groundwater. Current knowledge as well as present difficulties are discussed. The role of the classically trained civil engineer in the evolving field of groundwater contamination is evaluated. Future directions for the field and an assessment of the additional skills needed to address these problems are also reviewed.
