Abstract
Abstract Drug metabolism plays a major role in modulating the activity and clinical outcomes of medicines. The chapter focuses on the formation of active metabolites by considering drugs having no active metabolite (e.g. soft drugs), drugs producing active metabolites, and prodrugs whose activity is due solely to an active metabolite. Drug–drug interactions are also exemplified using protease inhibitors.
