Abstract
The wireless ATM (WATM) has been studied intensely. While different WATM demonstration networks are carried out all over the world, the commercial IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) is competing for more consumers with the wired LAN. If some modifications and extra protocols are applied to the WLAN, the quality of service (QoS) of different services is guaranteed. This is a practical way to achieve wireless access to ATM. The essence and model of the media access control (MAC) protocol are given. The authors present the detailed process to improve the WLAN for the access to ATM network.
