Abstract

The present paper elaborates the competitive edge in telecom industry in India. The Indian telecommunication industry is one of the largest fastly growing industry in the world and India is projected to become second large telecom market globally by 2010. This paper has been divided into ten major segments namely introduction, growth, private players, major investors, policy initiatives, regulatory framework, key trends, growth avenues, conclusion and lastly references. Indian Telecommunications started in 1851 and telephone services were introduced in 1881 but first wind of reforms in telecommunications sector began to flow in 1980s. After the establishment of first National Telecom Policy (NTP) 1994 and in 1997, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Indian telecom industry moved with a much fast growth and wireless sector put behind the wireline sector in India. Indian telecom sector from its past to present scenario has been discussed in this paper. It is highlighting on private players role, major investment done by the private investors and new growth avenues have also been shown. Hence it has been concluded that telecom industry in India is one of the fastest growing industry and has been zooming up the growth curve at a feverish pace in the past few years. And even the Indian wireless market is concerned it is also booming which has plenty of rooms for growth.
