Abstract

The aim was to find out a reliable index for the degree of proteinuria in children by examining just a single urine sample In this study 49 patients with normal or reduced glomerular filtration rate and variable degrees of protein loss were studied Urine sample were collected in separate bottles for twenty four hours Protein concentration was measured using sulfosaliciylic acid and creatinine concentration using Jaffe method Protein creatinine ratio and hourly protein excretion were calculated In each urine sample there was a strong relation between early morning urine protein concentration and twenty four hour urine protein excretion in children with proteinuria with normal or reduced glomerular filtration rate r=0 798 and r=0 822 respectively In patients with normal or reduced glomerular filtration rate hourly urine protein excretion taken at different times showed different correlation with twenty four hour urine protein excretion and this can not be a reliable index In patients with normal or reduced glomerular filtration rate the early morning urine protein concentration and in the protein creatinine ratio afternoon urine sample showed a strong correlation with twenty four hours urine protein excretion r=0 842 r=0 923 r=0 765 r=0 930 respectively In children with normal and reduced glornerular filtration rates; the early morning urine protein concentration the early morning urine protein creatinine ratio and afternoon urine protein creatinine ratio are reliable and easily appliable indexes for the detection of the degree of proteinuria Key words: proteinuria nephrotic syndrome children
