Abstract

the beginnings of the Nineteen Century, the heads of the US Army Medical Department showed a true interest for the updating of the medical officers, even when these were appointed to the most remote posts. In the course of time, this effort leaded to the foundation of a central library for the medical publications. Finally, it crystallized into a basic institution for the progress of the Medicine: The National Library of Medicine, the biggest and most important medical library of the whole world.
