Abstract

Abstract Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) is an historic modulation format which is finding new interest, especially in infrared optical communications. In this paper we introduce PPM in the more general context of pulse modulations. We introduce both analog PPM, for the transmission of continuous time messages, and digital PPM, for data transmission. Since nowadays the digital PPM format is universally used, a particular emphasis is given to this format.
