Abstract

The steady rise in energy costs and the commitment of industry to proper waste disposal, prompted Research Oil Company to replace its old plant, originally designed to rerefine industrial lubricants with a new facility which successfully salvages energy from industrial liquid wastes. Research Oil's plant was designed and built to process industrial liquid wastes unfit for rerefining, to produce fuels and lubricant base stocks, pretreated wastewater for discharge to a publicly operated treatment facility and a small amount of non-hazardous solids for landfill. Treatment plants of this type only became a viable economic alternative when publicly operated treatment works refused to accept industrial liquid wastes without pretreatment, and industry and waste haulers were no longer willing or able to dump such material indiscriminately. The rapid rise in the price of crude oil has been responsible for adding to the value of the fuels and lubricants that can be salvaged.
