Pre-Raphaelite Wonderland: Christian Yandell’s Alice

Abstract

Christian Yandell was the first Australian artist to illustrate Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. A number of her drawings from the 1924 Whitcombe’s Story Books edition are in the Pre-Raphaelite manner, with ornately draped courtiers serving the King and Queen of Hearts, and Alice engaging in a game of croquet before a finely drawn background of dense foliage and heartland banners. Whilst Carroll's friendship with members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood is well known, a deeper association between the Alice books and Pre-Raphaelitism is usually not made. Yandell's application of Pre-Raphaelite imagery and technique to this classic text of juvenile fantasy fiction is discussed.
