The nature of energy conservation is analyzed by considering methods of measuring energy use and conservation; energy intensity or the ratio of energy consumed to the GNP; the thermodynamic efficiency of energy processes in which energy changes form; economic yardsticks for judging the overall efficiency of energy use; how to evaluate energy waste; role of energy costs in inducing conservation action; and the social and public policy aspects of conserving energy.
