A discussion covers the necessity of accelerating commercialization of shale oil production in view of the energy shortage; available U.S. reserves of oil shale; current retorting technology for extracting oil from shale and a summary of experimental and pilot-plant retorting facilities; the necessity for expensive upgrading of raw shale oil by removal of organic sulfur and nitrogen compounds; and Federal fiscal policies that would encourage the development of the high-risk, capital-intensive shale oil venture to a mature, basic energy industry.
