Illinois Institute of Technology owes most of the buildings on its main campus to a man born at a time and place that had little to do with technology in the modern sense. His name was Maria Ludwig Michael Mies, and the members of his immediate family made their living as stonemasons, chiefly as craftsmen of tombstones. He was born in the Rhineland city of Aachen in 1886, shortly after the creation of a unified imperial Germany. Some thirty-five years later, he renamed himself Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, eventually becoming one of the world’s most illustrious architects, with a reputation that depended in no small way on his master plan for the campus of Armour Institute of Technology (later IIT) and his design of the major buildings occupying that site, which still draw pilgrims from around the world.
