Abstract

This chapter addresses public health issues relevant to sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It outlines the current health status in SSA in relation to progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); trends in the development of public health services, including health sector reforms, and prospects for the future following some major new public health initiatives. It concludes with an overarching challenge — the need for human capacity to meet the health needs of SSA.
