Abstract
The agriculture of the lower Zone of the Canary Islands, up to 400 m, is oriented towards export and therefore of special importance for the islands. Since the second Part of the 19th century the main crop of this Zone is the banana. It has a high requirement of water. The subterranean water reserves are overexploited and the water production .is diminishing since many years. On Tenerife agriculture needs 80 % of the water and efforts have been made to utilize the reserves more efficiently by introducing new irrigation techniques and crops. Avocado is an alternative crop planted since many years, other new crops are tested. In the 1960's commercial mango cultivars were introduced; today some plantations with together under 100 ha exist. The main criteria for the choice of appropriate cultivars are fruit size, colour and taste and the incidence of embryo abortion caused by the relatively low winter and spring temperatures. Tolbert and Lippens are best suited for commercial plantings on the islands, but other cultivars are also planted. The water requirement of mangos in the Canaries is approximately half of that of banana. Research for establishing an appropriate fertilization Programme is carried out. Deficiencies in Fe and Zn are frequent but easy to control. Soft-nose or jelly fruit can be prevented by harvesting at the green-ripe stage. The number of pests and diseases is low. Today the production is sold on the Spanish mainland, but in future Part of it could be exported to countries of the European Common Market.
