Abstract

Abstract The practice of collaborative development via an open source software model and the use of open source licensing started as a grassroots movement and have graduated to the mainstream. The historical development of the open source movement is explored, as well as the set of terms and principles defining open source licenses. Recent survey information on the impact of open source software is presented.
