Abstract
Environemntal Protection Agency (EPA) regulations reducing the use of lead in motor gasoline has had significant effects on the refining industry. As a result, there has been a sharp rise in the octane requirements of the gasoline pool. Refiners must look at economical ways of upgrading their processing facilities to maintain both production rates and increased octane levels without an increase in gasoline prices. The problem is significant in light of future gasoline octane needs.
