Abstract Zen, Avizena Elfazia. 2009.  The Tide Rises The Tide Falls: A Semiotics Analysis . Thesis. English Literature, Faculty of Letter, State University of Malang. Advisor: Drs. Sigit Selandono Keywords : Semiotics, Poetry, Sign, Interpretation In literary communication, especially poetry, author communicates what he means through certain symbols which mostly are not easy to interpret. The problem mostly occurs in the classes of poetry interpretation. The theory that will help the students to cope the problem is the theory of semiotics. The students need the theory of semiotics to be able to give explanation about their thought. They need the theory of semiotics also, to understand the references of the signs, the author, the message, and themselves as readers. Thus, analyzing poetic signs in literature, especially poetry, becomes the focus of this study. The writer believes that the study of semiotics will help her, other literature students, and readers to cope with the problem of subjectivity and lack of reasons in interpretation. By using poetry as the object of the study, she believes that she will be able to apply the theory of semiotic; the writer believes that she will be able to share the knowledge with others and understand poetry in a better platform. The writer uses one of Longfellow’s poems,  The Tide Rises The Tide Falls  as a representative of the poetry genre. The writer sees that Longfellow represents the modern poets.  The poem itself is also an entity built on significations of conventional signs. The writer believes that semiotics will help her to reveal the use of the signs in the point of view of the terms and the functions. Through research, the writer analyzes the way semiotics works in the sign analysis of the poem. The writer analyzes the system of signs in the poem, which is built on the referential relationship among each sign internally and between signs and their convention. Then, the writer analyzes the characteristic of the signs; interpret the meaning of the signs intertextually. The result of the research is that the poem’s system of sign is the use of intertextual relationship by understanding of poem’s sign. The poem is built on the combination of signs and develop new signs that support the main theme of this poetry.
