[Results of a questionnaire on vasectomy].

An analysis of the surgical techniques and the effectiveness of vasectomies performed in 50 surgical departments in Denmark is presented. 41 of the departments did not examine the patient until he came in for the operation. Most of the departments performed the operation by resecting 1/2-2 cm of the vas deferens and ligating both the distal and proximal ends. 38 required a histological examination of the resected tissue. 27 of the departments recommended contraception for 3 months following the operation to insure sterility. Sperm analyses are recommended to determine if the operation was successful and if any live sperm still may be present after the operation. Spontaneous recanalization occurred in .2-6.% of the cases reported usually within 2 months after the operation. Special clinics manned by surgeons should be established to meet the increasing demand for vasectomy.
