Abstract
This chapter presents the environmental impacts and benefits of developing biomass resources and their potential as a renewable source of energy and fuel. These biomass feedstock can be divided into different categories: (1) forest biomass; (2) agricultural biomass; (3) specialty energy crops; and (4) animal manures, food processing residues and wastes and municipal solid wastes. Also described are bioenergy technologies for biomass processing, including physical conversion, direct combustion, biochemical conversion, thermochemical conversion, chemical conversion, and biorefining.
