Abstract
At the time of the 1957 Rochester Conference, there appeared to be disagreement on the relative effectiveness of protons and pi /sup -/ mesons for producing strange particles. Cloud chamber measurements of hyperon and heavy meson production cross sections in iron for 2.6-Bev protons and 1.8-Bev negative pions are reported. These measurements show that pi /sup -/ mesons produce hyperons much more copiously tan do protons-, but they do not indicate any significant difference in the pi /sup -/ and proton cross sections for the production of cbarged K mesons.
