Abstract
The article examines the economic prerequisites for establishing pension insurance institutions and analyzes the results of the 2002 pension reform and systemic problems that hinder the efficient functioning of pension institutions, including defined contribution pensions. Based on a comparison of the pension systems in Russia and developed countries, ways of establishing pension insurance mechanisms are suggested.
