Abstract

Theoretical models of double layers for the potential structures along auroral field lines are reviewed. The role of the backscattered and the trapped electrons in the formation of the auroral double layers is stressed. The importance of treating the auroral double layer as an integral part of the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling system is also emphasized. Finally, the formation of discrete auroras due to an enhanced magnetospheric convection is demonstrated.
