Abstract

Chemical heat pumps are mechanically driven heat pumps with working fluids that undergo chemical changes or are heat-driven heat pumps in which either the driver (heat engine) or heat pump utilizes a reactive working fluid. As such, chemical heat pumps can be classified by drive (electric drive, heat amplifier, or temperature amplifier), operating mode (periodic or continuous), coupling between the heat engine and heat pumps, thermodynamic cycle used in the heat engine and heat pump, and phases of the working material. This classification of chemical heat pumps suggests many new heat pump configurations that have not been considered previously. This document describes possible heat pump configurations and the justification for selecting certain heat pumps for further study. Four types of heat-of-reaction chemical heat pumps are considered worthy of further development; the characteristics of these pumps are discussed in this document. 18 refs., 19 figs., 2 tabs.
