Abstract

There are more than 180 private and public companies involved, employing more than 75,000 people in urban and regional Australia. The systems comprise a total of 40,000 km of a combination of private and governmen, broad, standard and narrow gauge track, inclusive of 8,000 km of interstate highway network. Australia's railways haul around 36% of the nation's domestic freight (compared with 35% by road and 29% by sea). Urban and commuter rail services carry over 600 million rail passengers each year, and are an integral part of the nation's public transport network.
