Abstract

Lethal effects of a diatomaceous earth (DE) \nformulation (Protect-It) against rice weevil \n(Sitophilus oryzae L.) and red flour beetle \n(Tribolium castaneum Herbst) were investigated \nin wheat bioassay. Lethal effects of DE were \nexamined indoors, at 45 % r.h. and 26 °C, after \nexposing adults of both insect species to treated \nwheat over periods of 2, 7, 14 and 21 days, and 7 \ndays recovery on untreated wheat. DE effects on \nprogeny reduction in both species were also \ninvestigated after each exposure period. \nThe mortality produced in groups with \ndifferent numbers of exposed S. oryzae adults \n(25, 50 and 100 individuals per 100 g of treated \nwheat per replicate) after 2, 7, 14 and 21 days \nwas 52.0-61.0 %, 73.5- 88.0 %, 98.8-100 % and \n100 %, while the respective mortality of T. \ncastaneum adults was 8.0-20.3 %, 77.0-87.0, \n100 % and 100 %. \nReduction in the F1 generation of S. oryzae \nadults exposed for 2, 7, 14 and 21 days, \ndepending on the initial number of exposed \nindividuals, ranged 7.14-47.06 %, 2.77- 13.11 %, \n2.46-5.00 % and 1.45-4.00 % for. A corresponding \nreduction in T. castaneum fecundity over the \nsame exposure periods ranged 0.00-25.00 %, \n1.51-3.33 %, 0.00 % and 0.00 %. The reduction in F2 generation ranged 1.75-4.60 %, 0.00- 0.83 %, \n0.00-0.50 % and 0.00-0.37 % for S. oryzae \nexposed for 2, 7, 14 and 21 days, and 0.00-3.84 \n%, 0.00-1.92 %, 0.00 % and 0.00 % for T. \ncastaneum.
