Abstract
Genetics of yield components was investigated from combining ability analysis of a 12x12 diallel under a range of environmental conditions in pearl millet (Pennisetum typhoides (B.) S. and H.). Variances due to general combining ability and specific combining ability were significant for all the characters. Both additive and non-additive gene effects were important for the expression of all the yield contributing characters. L 111 B, 5154 B and 5054 B for head weight and effective tillers and 700516-1-2-3, 700251-1-1-1, 700651-1-1-3 and J-1593 for head length and plant height were identified as good general combiners and desirable parents. There appeared to be no association between per se performance as s.c.a. effects. Best cross combinations for various components were selected and their use in breeding programmes has been advocated. Breeding methodology for the exploitation of this material has been discussed.
