Abstract
Steel and reinforced concrete are frequently combined in composite or mixed structural systems. This combination generally results isn greater economy and safety than could be achieved by either material alone. However, the combination of two dissimilar materials results in serious design problems, and it is important that structural designers and researchers keep up with the latest developments in this field. This special publication presents a comprehensive state of the art for composite construction in the United States and abroad. The articles should be of interest to practicing engineers, educators and researchers, since they describe recent research developments and new innovations in the design and construction of composite structures. The papers draw from the professional practice of the United States and numerous other countries.
