Abstract
This paper reviews current environmental (climate, soil and water supply) limits to maize production and recent and current agronomic practices, with particular emphasis on cultivar selection, water and nutrient supply and management in dryland and irrigated production systems, plant population and planting geometry and harvest practices (maize for grain only). The review will then examine the potential for expansion in maize production and propose changes to cultivar adapation and agronomic practices that could facilitate increased incorporation of maize in both dryland and irrigated production systems.
