Abstract
A study is presented of the correlation between the parameters of the solar wind and the Kp and Dst geomagnetic indices during a period of high solar activity. The analysis is based on solarwind data obtained from measurements performed on the European satellite HEG8-1 during the period from Dec. 5. 1968, to Mar. 1, 1970. In studying the correlation between the two geomagnetic indices and the solar-wind density, bulk velocity, and temperature, it is found that the best correlation is between the bulk velocity and Kp. In addition, Kp varies about one to two hours before the bulk velocity varies. It is suggested that the variation of the Kp index is due to the compression of the geomagnetic field lines which occurs before the solar-wind particles reach the magnetosphere. (IAA)
