Abstract
This chapter discusses operations and procedures of a global system for mobile communications (GSM) mobile phone. When the mobile is switched ON, its first task is to find a suitable base transceiver station (BTS) through which it can gain access to the network. After the appropriate cell is selected and the mobile is camped to the BTS, then the MS enters the idle mode, where it must monitor the BTS paging channel. Next, the chapter looks at the location update procedure, security procedure and access mode. In order to maintain a good link quality during the call, the switching of an on-going call to a different channel or cell is known as handover. The chapter explains different types of handover.
