Chapter 7. Environmental Impact Assessment in the Bay of Bengal Sub Region in South Asia

Abstract

The environmental problems faced by the countries of the Bay of Bengal Sub region in South Asia are significant but they are far from being managed in a sustainable manner. The chapter provides an overview of environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure and the ways in which it can contribute to sustainable environmental development. It examines the scope of EIA and the role of EIA in protecting the marine environment. The chapter then discusses marine environmental conditions in the region. It also examines regional and national activities on EIA and various obstacles to the application of EIA. As an improved regional strategy for EIA, a strengthened EIA procedure based on cooperation and partnership building is proposed. The geographic scope of this chapter mainly covers the marine and coastal environment of Bangladesh and India (West Bengal).
