Abstract
Pertinent information of the major announced shale oil projects is summarized. The direct combustion heating and indirect heating processes for shale oil retorting are discussed briefly. Four instances of processing of shale oil from test retort in conventional refineries during the 1970s are reviewed very briefly. Some projected assessments of processing and yields for oil shales during the late 1980s are presented. Even in the light of 6 major drawbacks in the industry, a production level of over 47,000 kL/day of shale oil may be achieved by 1990. (BLM)
