Abstract
The public transport system of Sao Paulo, Brazil is based on the 58km Metro and the six-route, 270km network of electric suburban (commuter) railways, operated by CPTM. Both systems are managed under the same roof, but on different floors of an office complex. The history of CPTM, established in 1992, is described. Plans for expanding the rail network and improving the role of Luz station, one of four interchange stations between CPTM and Metro SP, are outlined. CPTM's policy is to modernise overhead wires on all 6 lines and stations, signalling systems and telecommunications and rolling stock. The urban Metro system is expanding with new lines. There are plans to rebuild several CPTM lines as Metro lines. The future for CPTM is considered.
