Abstract
A hull design system based on structural design flow has been developed. In this flow, first the most economical structural arrangement to satisfy a given performance, including the hull plan to main dimensions etc. and the type of ship, is determined. Then severe load conditions to be encountered by the ship during service are estimated, the structural response to them is accurately determined, and the strength against yield, buckling, and fatigue is examined. In this process, the most economical structural design with sufficient strength is decided by repeated calculations. On the basis of this basic hull structure design, the detail design is developed, the ship is constructed and delivered, and even after commissioning, problem-solving efforts are made to meet the customer's requirements, and data on the ship in service is accumulated and fed back for design.
