Abstract
A research endeavor involving extensive data collection generally represents the combined efforts of a number of individuals and organizations, and this project is no exception.Our appreciation is expressed first to the Northwest Area Foundation and to the U.S. Department of Agriculture whose respective Low Input Sustainable Agriculture programs provided a large portion of the financial resources required for the data collection effort.The facilities and support personnel of the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and the NDSU Extension Service also were invaluable to the effort.Individuals who made important contributions in designing and conducting the survey include Bruce Dahl, Gary Goreham, Roy Jacobsen, Lon Larson, Randy Sell, Larry Stearns, and George Youngs.Two groups deserve our special thanks, for without their efforts the study could not have been completed.The first of these were the 340 farm and ranch operators who graciously provided operational and financial data for the fifth time since 1985.The second group is our telephone interviewers who performed in the best traditions of this longitudinal project.They are listed here in order of the time they committed to the effort: Chris Ann Fox,
